With over 100 members, Columbia Remodelers is one of the top ten largest of such groups in the country.  Listed here is the history of our group, our mission and the volunteers who help make us better every day.

Professionals with higher standards dedicated

to making your home the best it can be.

The Remodelors Council of Greater Columbia was formed in June of 1986 by members of the Home Builders Association of Greater Columbia who were involved in the home improvement industry. These members realized a need for a specialized council to promote ethical business practices and set quality standards for the remodeling industry in the midlands.

Since 1986, the Remodelors Council has been successful in boosting the public image of the remodeling industry and improving the industry in general. The council has been awarded seven national Council Awards for Demonstrating Remodelor Excellence (CADRE) from the National Remodelors Council.  Our Remodelors is currently one of the ten largest in the entire country, and growing each month!

In 2008, we became the HBA of Greater Columbia Remodelers (HBAR), or Columbia Remodelers.

IMPROVEMENT THROUGH EDUCATION

Education of both the general public and remodeling professionals is a main focus of the Columbia Remodelers.  Go to our "Education" page here.

Homeowners can attend special seminars held regularly at the Carolina Classic Home and Garden Show in March and the August Home Improvement Show - Redo Remix  that concentrates on various aspects of home remodeling. Consumers learn what to expect during a kitchen renovation or what they should do before seeking contractor bids, for example. Valuable information on how to select a contractor is available at seminars or by request to the council staff.

We recognize the importance of educating contractors and their industry associates as well. Members gain information on the latest renovation techniques and products by attending seminars led by nationally recognized speakers as well as local experts. Quarterly membership meetings offer educational programs to members and provide the opportunity to learn from one another's experiences.

The University of Housing which is the educational arm of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB), sponsors a certification program for remodelers. Through a curriculum of courses dealing with construction technology and business management, remodelers can earn the Certified Graduate Remodelor (CGR) professional designation.

Members also receive the latest information on industry trends and technology through publications and mailing from NAHB and the NAHB Remodelers. Other good sources of education and information for the remodeler are conventions on the state and national level. We have received a CADRE award for our Member Education programs.

IMPROVEMENT THROUGH COMMUNITY SERVICE
A letter from President George Bush in August 1990 began with these words: "Word has reached me of your outstanding record of community service. I congratulate you on your achievements." Community and human service is another way we benefit our community and the public image of the remodeling industry.

Columbia Remodelers received our first CADRE award for "Outstanding Efforts by a New Council" from NAHBR in 1986 after the young council renovated the Weekend Gallery of The Columbia Museum. In 1988 our members undertook a huge project to renovate two buildings at The Providence Home, a local homeless shelter, and returned the next summer to convert a garage apartment into a free dental clinic for the underprivileged. These projects and others including repairing damage from Hurricane Hugo in Sumter and assistance to Helpline of the Midlands earned us another CADRE Award in 1990.

Another large scale project at Richland Memorial Hospital expanded from late 1990 through 1991 when the council renovated an old boarding house into what is known as "The Caring House," a place for out-of-town cancer patients and their families to stay while receiving treatment at any of Columbia's hospitals.

In 1992, our members returned to The Columbia Museum of Art and constructed several display cases at no cost to the museum and later that year participated in a national project to collect new Christmas toys for children in South Florida left homeless after Hurricane Andrew.

"Rampathon USA" in 1993 resulted in Columbia Remodelers constructing wheelchair ramps for underprivileged citizens in need and in 1994 our members join their fellow Home Builders Association members to construct a home for the Midlands Chapter of Habitat for Humanity. Community service continues on an annual basis and the council currently is volunteering it's services to the Council on Aging of the Midlands by performing free inspections on homes in need of repair which are owned by elderly citizens.

And most recently, we were awarded the Community Service REGAL Award from The State newspaper for our wheel chair ramp projects and work with Carolina Sunshine for Children.
