The Remodelors™ Council of Greater Columbia is planning a full year of continuing education courses. Courses are offered through the University of Housing and the National Association of Home Builders for Certified Graduate Remodelor™ (CGR), Certified Graduate Builder (CGB), Certified Graduate Associate (CGA) and  Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) designations.

Certification CoursesThese certifications help to increase professional credibility and enhance competitive edge in the marketplace, broaden networking opportunities within your industry and local community, and they provide information and educational opportunities to improve your business management and technical skills. Currently there are just over 850 people in the entire country with the CGR certification.

The Certified Graduate Remodelor™ (CGR) program, of the NAHB Remodelors™ Council, emphasizes business management skill as the foundation of a successful remodeling operation. Call or e-mail Tara Occhipinti or Tyrone Doughty at the NAHB University of Housing at 1-800-368-5242 ext 8387 for more information on CGR or CGB designations.

How do you get these designations?

CGR PREP Test

The Professional Remodeler Experience Profile (PREP) Test determines a remodelers strengths and weaknesses in all areas of remodeling and business management.  The results from the PREP Test tells the student how many CGR Courses are needed to attain the designation and which classes are needed.  The PREP Test is the first step towards a CGR designation. CAPS designation   (More CAPS information)

The Certified Aging-in-Place Specialist (CAPS) designation program teaches the technical, business management, and customer service skills essential to competing in the fastest growing segment of the residential remodeling industry – home modifications for the aging-in-place.  The NAHB Remodelors™ Council – in collaboration with the AARP, NAHB Research Center, and NAHB seniors Housing Council – developed this program to provide comprehensive, practical, market-specific information about working with older and maturing adults to remodel their homes for aging-in-place. More information on CAPS

Certified Graduate Remodelor™ (CGR)

This series of courses was designed by remodelers to help other remodelers raise their level of business performance. This program is sponsored by the NAHB Remodelors Council™ and courses are administered by NAHBs University of Housing. Candidates are required to take a specified number of courses as determined by the results on the Professional Remodeler Experience Profile (PREP).

Certified Graduate Builder (CGB)

Certified Graduate Builder (CGB) courses offer an overview of key areas in today's home building industry-business management, financial strategies, marketing techniques, construction technologies, and more. To earn a CGB certificate a builder must complete nine, six hour courses. To maintain the designation, a graduate must take one additional CGB course (6 hours) every year after the initial certificate date and pay a $50 renewal fee. The six hours also may be earned by taking approved state and local seminars, NAHB national seminars or college courses related to the building industry.

Master Builders of South Carolina (CMB)

The SC Master Builder program is a professional designation program created by the Home Builders Association of SC as a way for exemplary builders and remodelers to distinguish themselves since all builders in the state must be licensed.  Twenty hours of approved education and other criteria must be met.  Get more information on the CMB designation program here.
